LG's LM9600 full-array local dimming LED TVs expand to 60 inches | CES 2012: Televisions - CNET BlogsLAS VEGAS--Last year LG released only one TV with our favorite kind of LED backlight, but for 2012 it has announced three sizes, from 47 through 60 inches.
All three of the LG LM9600 series offer that rare full-array local dimming LED backlight, but only two--the 47- and 55-inchers--utilize the "Nano" structure found on the 2011 55LW9800, which allows for a thinner cabinet design. The non-Nano 60-incher will have a thicker cabinet, although all three will boast the company's new thin Cinema Screen bezel, measuring "less than 5mm" according to a company rep we spoke to.We asked whether the company had improved the screen finish, which was among the worst we'd seen on the 55LW9800, but he couldn't tell us by press time. He also couldn't yet specify how many "zones" of dimming each size provides.Otherwise, these high-end LED TVs will offer all of LG's other step-up features, including the four-way Magic Motion remote with voice control and LG's redesigned Smart TV suite. For more on these features, check out our writeup of the LM8600 series.Naturally they're also passive 3D TVs with LG's 2012 improvements, including better 2D-to-3D conversion, a 3D depth control with 20 steps, and Dual Play to cure the ills of spilt-screen gaming. New for 2012, LG includes six pairs of passive 3D glasses.Pricing was not announced at the show, although LG's rep did give us approximate availability dates (see below).LG LM9600 series features:

LAS VEGAS--LG's pre-CES teaser release already confirmed the company's plans to ship a massive 84-inch 4K resolution LCD TV this year, but now we know when, and can speculate whether it will provide "lossless" passive 3D images.
The LG 84LM9600 will be the largest LCD confirmed for U.S. shipping this year, outdoing the
80-inch Sharp. LG has shown the screen size before but this is the first time it has promised a U.S. ship date: June or July of this year, according to the company rep we spoke to, price TBD.
The TV will have a resolution of 3,840x2,160 pixels, aka 4K, since it's four times the number of pixels employed by garden-variety 1080p TVs (1,920x1,080). For its part, LG calls the resolution "UD" for "ultra-definition," making this a (wait for it) "UDTV." We asked a company rep whether that improved resolution would help with reproduction of passive 3D and while he was quick to assure us that current passive 3D by LG is superb in every way, he did mention the potential for "lossless" resolution.Current passive 3D TVs by LG, Vizio, and Toshiba use a film pattern retarder (FPR) system that essentially sends half of the 1080p resolution to each eye, which can cause some jagged line artifacts and visible line structure in our experience. A 4K TV like the 84LM9600 has double the vertical resolution, so it's capable of sending full 1080p to each eye even with an FPR system. We're curious to see how it works since this system comes closest to the ideal of passive glasses with full resolution to each eye (more info). We don't expect the extra resolution to have much impact for 2D material since native 4K content is basically nonexistent.Although it shares a series name with the 2012 LM9600 Nano line of full-array local dimming LED TVs, we don't know for sure what kind of LED backlight technology the 84-incher uses. We do know that it shares those models' feature sets, including the four-way Magic Motion remote with voice control and LG's redesigned Smart TV suite.LG 84LM9600 features:

Wer noch bis im Herbst Geduld hat und ein nettes Weihnachtsgeschenk möchte (um ins neue Maya Zeitalter zu starten ^^):
Television manufacturer LG says that by 2016, its organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, televisions will cost the same as an LCD television.CES 2012, but it might not be the only big OLED screen announced at the show; reports mention a similar TV from Samsung. While the public may remember Sony's XEL-1 from a couple of years ago and be familiar with the AMOLED screens of various Samsung phones, LG's EM9600 features a unique spin on the technology. While other OLEDs feature RGB (red, green, and blue) pixels, the LG adds a fourth, white pixel in a move LG says cuts costs and produces a brighter picture.[h=3][/h]
This year, the company is working toward reaching that goal with the release of its first OLED TV in the American market, the 55-inch 55EM9600.LG announced the TV in the week before
The TV will feature all of LG's current bells and whistles, including smart TV with streaming and social media, the new Magic Motion remote with "four modes," including a built-in mic, and passive 3D. The last feature is a surprise, as OLED is arguably more akin to plasma than LCD--it doesn't require a backlight--and LG's 2012 plasmas feature active 3D technology. As the EM9600 is LG's flagship TV for 2012, design is obviously paramount, and at only 4mm thick, the "virtually bezel-less" TV appears to deliver. A company representative we spoke with couldn't confirm bezel width by press time, but other reports cause us to suspect a bezel width of just 1mm. As for depth, the TV is so shallow, it includes a separate control box to house connectivity and other necessaries, connected to the panel by a proprietary cable. The EM9600 takes the "all screen" aesthetic to a new level. But it's not just about looking good; a TV has to perform as well. LG says the TV uses a proprietary algorithm designed to improve and refine hues and tones when viewed from a wide angle. According to LG, other OLED TVs "exhibit drastic changes in hues from different viewing angles and abnormal color gamut."The 55-inch LG EM9600 OLED is due to be released in the second half of the 2012, with September as the likely launch month. Look forward to more details and pricing then.
